PRINCIPLES OF BIBLICAL INTERPRETATION
Leader’s name: Barry Foster
Hosted by: Mustard Seed Church
Contact: 785-841-5685/msc@mustardseedchurch.com
Brief Description of group: Have you ever been in a discussion with someone about the Bible, and heard them say (or said yourself), “Well, that’s your interpretation.” What they mean, of course, is that they don’t agree with you, and they don’t intend to listen to you anymore. But is understanding the Bible just a matter of different opinions? Perhaps you’ve heard two people say conflicting things about a Bible verse during a Bible study, and wondered, “Who is right? Maybe they’re both right. Is that even possible? And how do I know?” This course explores basic principles for rightly interpreting and understanding the Bible, and introduces some essential methods for doing Bible study. The class examines (a) healthy and faulty approaches to Biblical interpretation, (b) the importance of five specific contexts which affect our understanding of Biblical texts, and (c) guidelines for interpreting the various genres of literature in the Bible.
Format: This course will be taught through lecture and discussions.
Duration: 15 weeks for an hour each session.
Day, Time & Location of group: This course meets Thursdays, starting February 4, from 6:30-7:25 pm at Mustard Seed Church.
Childcare available?: If requested in advance. Contact the church office.
Requirements?: This course costs $75 (for audit or credit). If taking the course for credit, there will be homework and tests and you are required to purchase books.

Brief Description of group: Have you ever wondered, “Why are there four gospels?” or, “What was it really like in Jesus’ day?” Would you like to understand how Paul’s letters fit with the book of Acts? Perhaps you’d like to get some clues how to make sense of the letter to the Hebrews or the book of Revelation. Or maybe you are interested in seeing how the New Testament fits together. Whether you are a brand new Christian, a young believer, or a mature saint, you can benefit greatly from the careful and systematic study of the Word of God. One great place to start is with a survey of the New Testament. Think of it as a personal tour, withinsightful instruction from a trusted guide to aid you in appreciating and understanding the world and literature of the New Testament. This course offers a brief overview of each book from the New Testament to help students understand the purpose, content, and major features of each book, become aware of relevant historical and cultural background materials, and comprehend the unity of the New Testament as a whole.
